Opernhaus Zurich Names New Opera Director

By Francisco Salazar

Opernhaus Zürich has named a new Opera Director.

The company named Annette Weber as its new director of opera and will replace Michael Fichtenholtz, who is under investigation for abuse and harassment.

Weber is currently the casting director of Staatsoper Hamburg and will begin her new position in Zurich in September.

Weber has worked as a director at the Badisch State Theater in Karlsruhe and in the same position at Berlin State University. She was also a consultant for artistic direction at the Semperoper Dresden.

Earlier in January the Zurich Opera reported that Fichtenholz decided to leave Zurich Opera House at the end of the current 2020-2021 season after three successful seasons and was being investigated for his behavior during his tenure. Fichtenholz was brought in back in 2017 and kicked off his tenure during the 2018-19 season. He had worked previously as the opera director at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe.
