
OperaUpClose to Tour Reimagined ‘Gianni Schicchi’ Production
By David SalazarOperaUpClose will tour a new production of Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi,” across the UK in Spring 2026.
The new take on the opera, renamed to “Gianni Schicchi (or Where There’s a Will),” is reimagined in English language by writer Hannah Kumari and composer Vahan Salorianand features six singers and a chamber ensemble.
It will be directed by PJ Harris and stars Dan D’Souza as Gianni Schicchi, rising soprano Cerefina Penny as Lauretta, and Irish bass John Malloy as Simon, with violinist Simon Hewitt Jones leading the ensemble.
“Gianni Schicchi (or Where There’s A Will) is the next in OperaUpClose’s season of Reinventions. We are thrilled to be working with a team of such exceptional artists, reinterpreting a classic in a bold and hugely entertaining dialogue between the contemporary and the established, bringing world-class opera at a chamber scale to venues across the UK,” said Artistic Director Flora McIntosh.
The opera tours the UK from March 5–21, 2026, with performances at Mayflower Studios (Southampton), Minerva Theatre (Chichester), Cambridge Arts Theatre, Blackpool Grand Theatre, artsdepot (London), and Theatre Royal Plymouth.
The company also revealed plans to tour a newly commissioned opera for two to five-year-olds.
