OperaRox Productions Announces 2018-19 Season

By Francisco Salazar

OperaRox Productions has announced its 2018-19 season focusing on two themes. The company will hold a Queer Opera festival and will also hold concerts focusing on Mental Health.

Here is a look.

Queer Opera Festival

OperaRox will return to The Stonewall Inn in the summer to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The company’s two-week Queer Opera Festival will include a reboot of the company’s Opera Rave Masquerade, which follows two gay couples on a punkinspired opera hit parade and an all-new Queer Opera Scenes performance that celebrates the LGBTQ+ community throughout the decades through canonically-queer operas.

The scenes that will be performed will include excerpts from Paula Kimper and Wende Persons’ “Patience and Sarah,” Griffin Candey and Thom Miller’s “Sweets by Kate,” Dana Kaufman and Tom Swift’s “Opera Kardashian,” Joe Rubinstein and Jason Kim’s “Legendary,” Ross Crean and Aiden Kim Feltkamp’s “The Times are Nightfall” and a new commission about trans women of color. The productions will be held from July 9 to 21, 2019 with resident stage director Amber Treadway helming each opera.

Mental Health Education Concerts

The company will also continue its commitment to mental health with two mental health education concerts, juxtaposing excerpts from its new opera “Ghost Variations” with art songs by the featured composers Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, and Johannes Brahms. There will also be art songs about mental health by Melissa Dunphy, Jessica Rudman, and Patricia Wallinga. The concerts will also include panels discussing mental illness with artists and health professionals.

Concerts will be held on Sept. 21, 2018 and May 17, 2019.
