Opera Southwest to Perform ‘Frida’

By Francisco Salazar

In collaboration with Opera Southwest, the National Hispanic Cultural Center is set to perform “Frida” by Robert Xavier Rodriguez.

The opera, which will feature a retelling of the life of one of Mexico’s iconic artists, Frida Kahlo, will be fully staged at the NHCC’s Albuquerque Journal Theater.

The iconic artist painted over fifty-five self-portraits, each depicting a moment in her life and the opera depicts these moments in Frida’s life through a blend of opera and musical theater.

“Frida” will star Eliza Bonet in the title role, José Sacín, Laura León, Olga Perez Flora, John Tiranno, Javier Ortiz, Amanda Porter, Ashli Saenz, and Ashley Lopez. Zoe Zeniodi conducts the production by John de los Santos.

The work opens on Feb. 13 and will also be performed on Feb. 18, 19, and 20, 2022.
