Opera Saratoga to Present ‘Katie: The Strongest of the Strong’

By David Salazar

Opera Saratoga will present “Katie: The Strongest of the Strong.”

The opera by Faye Chiao and Anton Dudley will star mezzo-soprano Syrena Torres and soprano Britt Hewitt. Mary Birnbaum directs and Julian Gau conducts.

The opera was originally commissioned by Houston Grand Opera in 2020 and is aimed for an audience of children. It is based on the true story of Katie Sandwina, a circus strongwoman who defied norms of the early 1900s. After moving from Austria to the U.S. and became a member of Barnum & Bailey Circus, she joined the fight for voting rights for women.

The opera features an all-woman cast.

There will be a performance on March 16 at The Hyde Collection with a showcase scheduled for March 23 at The Children’s Museum at Saratoga. The final showcase is set for March 28 at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.
