By David Salazar

Opera San José is in the midst of a special community series in anticipation of its production of “Zorro” this month.

Starting on March 28, the company initiated a series of community concerts in libraries around San José. The performances feature excerpts from “Zorro” as well as storybook readings.

The first two events on March 28 were at East San Jose Carnegie Branch and Almaden Library, with a March 30 program at the KING Library.

Forthcoming are events at Edenvale Branch and Santa Teresa Branch as well as another at Evengreen Branch. The series ends on April 4 with a showcase at Tully Branch.

The company is gifting children with a free Zorro mask and bookmark for participating.

“Zorro” opens on April 19 and runs through May 4, 2025. The production will be directed by David Radamés Toro, who will make his OSJ debut, and Jorge Parodi will conduct a cast starring tenor Xavier Prado as Diego de la Vega/Zorro and soprano Maria Brea as Ana Maria Soza. They are joined by baritone Eugene Brancoveanu, mezzo-soprano Melisa Bonetti Luna, soprano Arianna Rodriguez, mezzo-soprano Deborah Martínez Rosengaus, and bass-baritone Jesús Vicente Murillo.
