Opera San José Announces Resident Artists For 2019-20

Opera San José has announced its Resident Artists for the 2019-20 season.

The roster will include Conductor / Chorus Master / Principal Coach Christopher James Ray, Sopranos Kerriann Otaño and Elena Galván, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Sanchez, and baritone Eugene Brancoveanu. They will join tenor Mason Gates.

James will be returning to the company after having led “Pagliacci” and “Moby Dick” during the 2018-19 season and he is scheduled to conduct two performances of every production in the company’s forthcoming season, which includes “Hansel and Gretel,” “Die Fledermaus,” “Il Trovatore,” and “The Magic Flute.”

Otaño will be singing in all the operas, with leading roles of Leonora in “Il Trovatore” and Rosalinde in “Die Fledermaus” as highlights. Galván will take on Adele in “Fledermaus,” Gretel in Hansel and Gretel,” and Papagena in “The Magic Flute.”

Sanchez will be Hansel in “Hansel and Gretel,” and Orlofsky in “Fledermaus,” among other roles.

Finally, Brancoveanu will sing in all four operas with such roles as Eisenstein in “Die Fledermaus,” the Count di Luna in “Il Trovatore” and Papageno in “The Magic Flute” as the major leading roles.
