Opera Rara Releases ‘L’Ange De Nisida’ With Joyce El-Khoury

By Francisco Salazar

Opera Rara has released the world premiere recording of Donizetti’s “L’Ange de Nisida.”

The new recording was taken from two concert performances of the work in July 2018 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden with Opera Rara’s Artistic Director Sir Mark Elder leading the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House in his ninth Donizetti title for the company.

The new recording stars Joyce El-Khoury as Sylvia, David Junghoon Kim as Leone de Casaldi, Vito Priante as King Fernand of Naples, Laurent Naouri as Don Gaspar and Evgeny Stavinsky as the Monk.

The world premiere performance of the work marked the company’s fourth collaboration with the Royal Opera and was nominated by the International Opera Awards in the “Rediscovered Work” category; this was the company’s second nomination this year in addition to its recording of Rossini’s “Semiramide,” which was nominated in the Best Recording category.

“L’Ange de Nisida” was planned as one of Donizetti’s operas to be premièred in Paris after the composer’s move to the French capital in 1838, but was abandoned when the commissioning theatre, the Théâtre de la Renaissance, went bankrupt. The opera was reworked into “La Favorite.”

The opera is set to be performed at the Donizetti Opera Festival later this year.
