Opera Orlando to Stream Haiti-Inspired ‘Carmen’ Production

By Logan Martell

Following a sold-out, in-person production of Opera Orlando’s “Carmen,” set in Haiti in the 1960, the company has announced that it will present the production online via their “ENCORE! Series.”

Directed by Sara E. Widzer and conducted by Kelly Kuo, the cast includes mezzo Brianna Hunter in the title role, with tenor Noah Stewart as Don José, soprano Brittany Renee as Michaëla, and baritone Norman Garrett as Escamillo.

“Artistically this year has been intense and exciting for us, not only navigating COVID-19 and producing live theater indoors, but also translating our stage productions into cinematic events,” states executive director Gabriel Preisser. “It is amazing to me how different each experience of the shows is. I am so pleased our audiences can now enjoy our acclaimed, high-quality original productions in person, online, or both. Carmen was so electrifying on stage and has translated beautifully to the screen.”

The video will be available from April 16 to May 7, 2021, with tickets beginning at $25 per household.
