Opera Orlando to Present ‘Hansel and Gretel’ With Live Audience

By Nicolas Quiroga

Opera Orlando’s Main Stage series will continue with a production of “Hansel & Gretel” by Engelbert Humperdinck.

The showcase is set for performance on Jan. 29, 30, and 31, 2021 at the Dr. Phillips Center at the Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater. The opera will then be broadcast as part of the company’s ENCORE! series on Feb. 12 through 26, 2021.

The opera, based on the famed Grimm brothers’ fairytale, will be headlined by the studio artists of the Orlando Opera including soprano Kyaunnee  Richardsson as Gretel and mezzo-soprano Gloria Palermo as Hansel. Mezzo-soprano Robyn Rockleinn as the creepy witch, alongside baritone Torlef Borsting and mezzo-soprano Cass Panuska. The opera will be directed by Grant Preisser.

“I am very excited to re-visit this production and share it with a whole new audience,” added music director Robin Jensen in an official press release. “Apart from Hansel & Gretel being such a good piece of music and familiar story, it is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our Youth Company and get them involved on the MainStage. Audiences will love this light-hearted, spooky show and they can feel safe in the socially-distant seating set-up, with a reduced orchestra and cast onstage, as well as trusting in the safety protocols and procedures in place for both Opera Orlando and Dr. Phillips Center.”

Opera Orlando recently presented a production of “Die Fledermaus” with audience members present. The company employed several safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and plans to do the same for this production of “Hansel and Gretel.”
