Opera Neo Releases ‘The Magic Flute’ Film

By David Salazar

Opera Neo has announced a movie version of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”

The virtual opera production was directed by David Radamès Toro with editing, music direction, and cinematography by Opera Neo Artistic Director Peter Kozma.

The film was shot during the shutdown with all artists performing in front of green screens in their homes; the company provided singers with green screens, tripods, costume pieces and props. The global collaborations kicked off in May 2020.

“The onset of the pandemic left all of us in the opera world reeling,” Kozma said in a press statement. “But we realized that even with pandemic-induced budget constraints, we couldn’t sit back; we are artists and we need to create, we need to do our work, we need to sweat and cry and laugh. We need to come together in some way and bring joy into the world.”

The opera film stars baritone Luke Harnish as Papageno, tenor Andy Michael Zimmermann as Tamino, Danielle Bavli as the Queen of the Night, Sara Womble as Pamina, and Jóhann Schram Reed as Sarastro.
