By Dejan Vukosavljevic

Opera Neo, a company based in San Diego, has announced the release of the virtual production of the famed Mozart and Schikaneder singspiel “Die Zauberflöte.”

The release comes in four episodes, with the first episode broadcasting on August 15, 2020.

The production has been fully devised from the homes of the artists and the project brings together the work of over 65 singers, orchestra members, graphic designers, and a sound engineer.

“The onset of the pandemic left all of us in the opera world reeling,” Peter Kozma, the company’s Artistic Director, said in a press release. “But we realized that even with pandemic-induced budget constraints, we couldn’t sit back; we wanted to create an opportunity for our artists to come together and share their work with our audience.”

The cast for the virtual opera project includes soprano Sara Womble in the role of Pamina, tenor Andy Zimmermann as Tamino, and baritone Luke Harnish in the role of Papageno, among others.

Peter Kozma conducts the production by David Radamés Toro.

Access to each individual episode is $7.99, or $24.99 for the full opera. Broadcasts will be available on the company’s official website.
