The Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg has announced the cancelation of a performance of Bizet’s “Carmen” on Dec. 15, 2021.

“The health situation has deteriorated in the last few days among the teams participating in our production of ‘Carmen’,” said the opera house in an official statement.

The opera was set to star Edgaras Montvidas as Don José, Amina Edris in the role of Micaëla, Régis Mengus as Escamillo, and Stéphanie d’Oustrac in the title role. The cast also included Guilhem Worms, Judith Fa, Séraphine Cotrez, Anas Séguin, Christophe Gay, Raphaël Brémard, and Yanis Skouta. Marta Gardolińska was signed on to conduct a production by Jean-François Sivadier.

The Opéra National du Rhin is the second French opera house to bear the brunt of the rapidly worsening epidemiological situation in France. The Opéra Comique was forced to replace principal roles in the run of Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” as they tested positive for the virus.

The run of “Carmen” at the Opéra National du Rhin continues in January 2022 for the final two performances.
