Opera Modesto Releases ‘High, Low & Hip Hopera’ Concert

On March 12, 2021, Opera Modesto released “High, Low & Hip Hopera,” a filmed concert of classic selections, spiritual and cultural favorites, musical theatre numbers, and more.

Filmed on March 7 at the Gallo Center for the Arts Foster Theater, the concert features countertenor Logan Tanner, bass Nathan Stark, as well as baritone and Hip Hopera creator Babatunde Akinboboye. They are accompanied by pianist Dashiel Reed.

Among the classical selections are songs and arias by Beethoven, Bizet, Handel, Mozart, Quilter, Rossini, and Weill. The program also includes the spirituals “Done Made My Vow to de Lord,” “Oh Shenandoah,” and the Scottish Song “The Parting Glass.” From the musical “Ragtime,” is “Wheels of a Dream,” and from the “Lord of the Rings” soundtrack, Tanner sings Enya’s “May it be,” performed partially in Tolkien’s elvish language known as Quenya. Finally, Akinboboye performs a Nigerian prayer in the Yoruba language, titled “Adura fun Alafia.”

“High, Low & Hip Hopera” is available to stream from March 12 – 31. Tickets are $25, with student/senior discounts, as well as a “Pay What You Want” option. Ticket holders can view the concert without a limit between the available dates.
