By David Salazar

Opera Memphis has announced its 2019 Midtown Opera Festival.

The event kicks off in April with “The Falling and the Rising,” an opera that follows the imagined journey of a soldier suspended inside a coma after a roadside attack. The work was composed by Zach Redler with a libretto by Jerre Dyne.

Performance Dates: April 6, 12, 13, 2019

The company will also showcase Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” in collaboration with the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music.

Performance Dates: April 5, 7, 2019

In addition to the operas, the festival will showcase such performances as “Opera Takes Flight,” “Opera Goes to Broadway,” “Beethoven and the Beetles (featuring tenor Telly Leung),” and Lounge Performances with Opera Memphis’ big stars.

There will also be a libretto workshop for Dye’s latest opera, a Military Cabaret, and an event in which Bugs Bunny gives an introduction to opera.
