Opéra Louisiane to World Premiere ‘The Christmas Spider’

By Francisco Salazar

Opéra Louisiane is set to present the World Premiere of “The Christmas Spider,” a holiday a one-hour opera in English by an American composer and librettist team.

Inspired by a Ukrainian legend (which resulted in the placing of spider ornaments on Christmas trees for a lucky New Year), the opera is the third operatic collaboration between composer Clint Borzoni and librettist John de los Santos following “When Adonis Calls” and “The Copper Queen.”

The goal of the work is to dramatize a new tale for all ages, complete with an original yuletide carol, that adds to the rich musical tapestry of the holiday canon.

Taking the stage for the first time in her new role at Opéra Louisiane, General Director & CEO, Kathryn Frady will sing the role of the impatient landlady, Olha. The cast will also include Charles Eaton, Calvin Vaughn, and Harper Andermann. Librettist and Stage Director, John de los Santos will direct the production and Michael Borowitz will conduct it.

The opera will be presented on Dec. 15 and 17, 2023.
