The opera industry is responding to Timothée Chalamet’s remarks that said “no one cares” about opera or ballet.
Major houses like the Metropolitan Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, LA Opera, and Wiener Staatsoper have taken to social media posting varying messages.
The Met showed a video of the many artisans in the industry with the caption “All Respect to opera (and ballet) people out there,” while the LA Opera posted a picture of “Akhnaten” with the caption “Sorry, @tchalamet. We’d offer you complimentary tickets to ‘Akhnaten,’ but it’s selling out. There are a few seats left to purchase if you hurry.”
The Wiener Staatsoper posted a video interviewing young people about with the caption, “Of course, we had to follow up this claim immediately and asked ourselves! Do people really care about opera and ballet? @tchalamet consider this your personal invitation to Vienna. Our stage is waiting.”
The Bayerische Staatsoper posted a video with Chalamet’s comments and later showed a full theater giving a standing ovation to a ballet performance.
Opera Holland Park also responded stating, “The 40,000 people that visit us every summer can agree to disagree (love your work though @tchalamet).”
Prominent opera singers have also responded including Dean Murphy, Theo Hoffman, Isabel Leonard, Aprile Millo, and Anita Hartig, among many others. Other social media channels, including 360 of Opera, extended invitations to the movie star to engage in an opera experience. The OperaWire podcast’s upcoming episode will also unpack Chalamet’s comments.
The opera industry’s response has not gone unnoticed. People magazine took note of the controversy as Chalamet continues his Oscar campaign for his role in “Marty Supreme.”
In a recent interview with Matthew McConaughey for Variety and CNN, Chalamet said that he wanted to be in an art form that people cared about.
He said, “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.’” He then added, “all respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”
Despite being the heavy favorite to win the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in “Marty Supreme,” Chalamet, who won the top prize at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes, has faced recent setbacks at the SAG’s Actor Awards and, more prominently, lost out the top actor award at the BAFTAs to Robert Aramayo, who is not nominated for category at the Academy Awards.
