Opera in Williamsburg will present the East Coast premiere of Hector Armienta’s “Zorro.”

The production, showcased in collaboration with Opera Hispánica, will take the stage starting on Sept. 25, 2026 at the Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg, Virginia.

“Zorro” premiered in 2022 and is set in early 1800s as California rebel against Spanish colonial rule. The production is presented in English and Spanish with English and Spanish supertitles, and marks the company’s contribution to America’s 250th anniversary and Hispanic Heritage Month.

Michelle Cuizon directs, with Jorge Parodi conducting. Xavier Prado sings the title role, with Meryl Domínguez as Ana María, Lisa Chavez as Carlota, Eugene Brancoveanu as Moncada, Suchan Kim as Gómez, Melisa Bonetti Luna as Toypurina, Ethel Trujillo as Luisa and Branch Fields as Zazueta. Christina Schwinn designs lighting, and Miguel Girona Jr. serves as fight choreographer.

“I kept going in my mind over American operas that I knew, some were too large for us, others revolved around subject matter that seemed unrelated, and then I suddenly realized that the opera ‘Zorro’ was also an American opera and in fact was related to the topic of revolution and liberty, though with a Hispanic rather than a British flair,” Naama Zahavi-Ely, Artistic and General Director of Opera in Williamsburg, said, per an official press release.

There will be additional performances on Sept. 27 and 29, 2026.
