Opera in the Pines to Present ‘The Crucible’

By David Salazar

Opera in the Pines is set to present “The Crucible” for three performances from May 17-19, 2024.

The production will be comprised of Maine-based or tied singers and take place at The Old Red Church. The runtime is approximately 80 minutes and will be featured without intermission. Sable Strout directs the production.

“The Crucible” features music by Robert Ward and a libretto by Bernard Stambler and focuses in on the Salem Witch Trials.

Additionally, the company is presenting a series of pre-show events to prepare audience members for the experience of the opera. Among them will be a discussion led by Emerson “Tad” Baker, a Professor of History at Salem State University and author of “A Storm of Witchcraft.” During his event, Baker will delve into Maine’s connection with the Salem Witch Trials.

In another event, Strout will discuss the process of adapting traditional operas for new spaces.
