Opera Hong Kong To Present Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’

By David Salazar

Opera Hong Kong is set to present Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” in mid-May at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The production of the famed Mozart and da Ponte opera will be directed by Jean-Louis Grinda with Richard Ollarsaba and Marcelo Guzzo rotating in the famed title role. The opera will be conducted by Martins Ozolins. He will lead the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Hong Kong Chorus.

Guzzo recently starred in “Maria de Buenos Aires” at the Bare Opera. A review for his performance noted that “Baritone Marcelo Guzzo, listed as Payador, displayed a suave, low-lying vocal charm that aided in his role as a narrator of sorts; this could be turned into a keen edge, employing delicate high tones when he acted as a seducer of Maria.

Ollarsaba will be representing the U.S. at the 2019 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition this summer.

Katherine Whyte and Victoria Cannizzo will interpret Donna Anna, David Blalock will be Don Ottavio, Michelle Lange will be Donna Elvira, and Alex Soare and Joseph Barron will be Leporello.

Performances for the opera are set to take place between May 17-19.
