Opera Holland Park has announced Song in Opera.

The short series of recitals curated by Julien Van Mellaerts presents three programs with an innovative focus on storytelling and will star pianists Perez, Ella O’Neill, and Simon Lepper. Singers will include Fleur Barron, Nicky Spence, Anush Hovhannisyan, and Nardus Williams, and three of the 2021 OHP Young Artists, Charlotte Badham, Charlotte Bowden, and Isabelle Peters.

The series opens on July 25 with “The Diary of One Who Disappeared” featuring Tenor Nicky Spence and pianist Dylan Perez performing Janáček’s 1920 song cycle with the composer’s Moravian Folk Songs and Dvorák’s Gypsy Songs.

On July 26, Violetta and Tatyana will feature Anush Hovhannisyan exploring the music of Verdi and Tchaikovsky’s most loved heroines. Part of the program will focus on “La Traviata” and “Eugene Onegin.” Pianists Dylan Perez and Ella O’Neill present new four-hand transcriptions of some of the finest orchestral movements from the operas, while Van Mellaerts joins Hovhannisyan.

The final program will be dedicated to “The Marriage of Figaro” on July 27. Julien Van Mellaerts and Nardus Williams will step out of Mozart’s soundworld to retell the story of Count and Countess Almaviva’s marriage. The program will include songs and duets by Brahms, Mahler, Duparc, Gounod, Vaughan Williams, Obradors and Toldrá, Van Mellaerts, Williams, and Lepper.
