The Opéra National de Paris has canceled the fifth scheduled performance of Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” at the Opéra Bastille, per an official statement on the company’s website. The cancellation comes as a result of a strike notice against the French government’s pension reform.

The strike has caused the opera house to cancel a number of high profile productions including Borodin’s “Prince Igor” and Bellini’s “Il Pirata” in December. On Jan. 21, 2020 the company was also forced to cancel the opening night of Offenbach’s “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.”

Per the second statement, as a result of the national strike followed by some of the Opera’s staff, the Palais Garnier will be closed on Jan. 22.

Rossini’s opera was set to star Xabier Anduaga, Lisette Oropesa, Carlo Lepore, Krzysztof Bączyk, Tommaso Barea, Marion Lebègue, and Ilya Kutyukhin in the title role. Carlo Montanaro was scheduled to conduct the production by Damiano Michieletto.

“Il Barbiere di Siviglia” is scheduled to return to the stage on Sunday, Jan. 26 at the Opéra Bastille.
