Opéra de Lyon Appoints New Director To Follow Serge Dorny

Richard Brunel has been officially installed as the new director at the Opéra de Lyon, effective September 2021.

Per France Musique, the appointment was approved by Minister of Culture Franck Riester.

Brunel started his career as an actor in the early 1990s before creating the collective Compagnie Anonyme. From there his career continued to take flight with the director becoming a prominent figure in French theater. In 2014, he became a chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Since 2004, he has directed operas with such companies as the Opéra de Lille, Opéra National de Lyon, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Opéra-Comique, Opéra de Rouen, Théâtre la Monnaie, and Stadttheater Klagenfurt, among others.

He will replace Serge Dorny, who has been at the head of the Opéra de Lyon since 2003 and was ofen deemed “irreplaceable” in that position. Dorny is headed to Germany where he will take over the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich in September 2021.
