Opéra de Lille Appoints New Director
By Francisco SalazarOpéra de Lille has appointed Barbara Eckle as its new director.
She will take over the position on July 1, 2025. Eckle will succeed Caroline Sonrier, who has been the director of Opéra de Lille since 2003. Sonrier will continue in her position until June 2025. Eckle will be tasked with preparing the artistic programming for seasons 25-26 and beyond.
The announcement was made by Marie-Pierre Bresson, Chairman of the Opera Board of Directors, Deputy Mayor of Lille, Martine Aubry, and Chairman of the Recruitment Committee.
Eckle was Director of Drama for Opera and Concerts at the RUHRTRIENNALE International Festival of Arts from 2020 to 2023 and from 2018 to 2020, she was an opera and concert dramaturist at the Staatsoper Stuttgart. She has also worked alongside conductor Lorin Maazel and at the Royal Opera House. She has been an author and journalist for many years.
