Opera Connecticut to Present ‘Madama Butterfly’

By David Salazar

Opera Connecticut is set to open its 2019-20 season with a production of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” on Oct. 18 and 20 at the Hoffman Auditorium in West Hartford.

This is the first time the company presents the opera in its history.

The production is set to star Vittoria Gilda Miranda in the title role with Mark Womack as Sharpless and Ja’u Pupu’a as Pinkerton. Evanna Lai stars as Suzuki and Laurentiu Rotaru will be The Bonze.  The production will be conducted by Doris Lang Kosloff.

Miranda is a veteran of the title role, having performed a version of it back in 2018 with South of Broadway. Of her performance, Post and Courier published a notice that mentioned the soprano’s triumph. “Vittoria Gilda Miranda performed the role of the tragic geisha Cio-Cio San. Her voice was both powerful and lyrical. The full depth of despair that her character manifested moved me to tears.”

The company is set to showcase “Amahl and the Night Visitors” in December as part of its holiday opera offering.
