The Opera Company of Middlebury in Vermont has announced that it will be taking its 17th season online with “Completing the Picture.”

On Nov. 15, the company will present the mini-opera by Michael Ching and Victoria Panella Bourns, in a new video adaptation by Anderson.

“We wanted to start with something short,” said Douglas Anderson, the company’s Artistic Director “so we could hone our skills in this new medium. But we also wanted to find a work that somehow contributes to the national conversation about history and race.”

The work focuses on a famous photo of “The Golden Spike” which was taken at the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Over 20,000 Chinese workers built the western part of the railroad, but not a single one of them is featured in the image.

The 10-minute opera will star baritone Leroy Davis, tenor James Flora, mezzo Olga Perez Flora, and soprano Emily Michiko Jensen. OCM’s principal guest conductor Michael Sakir and Montpelier pianist Mary Jane Austin will complete the musical team for “Completing the Picture.”
