Opéra Comique to Stream Production of ‘Hippolyte et Aricie’

UPDATE: A previous article did not note that the production would be recorded.

The Opéra Comique has officially canceled its performances of “Hippolyte et Aricie” due to regulations imposed by the French government as a result of COVID-19. Instead the company will be presenting a streamed version.

On its official website, the company noted that due to the government’s decree on Oct. 28, the organization was left with no choice but to re-evaluate its programming and thus shut down all performances set for the month of November.

“We will, in any case, find a way to record and stream the performance and will keep you updated,” the company stated on its website.

The work will be directed by Jeanne Candel and performed behind closed doors and broadcast on November 14 at 4 p.m.

The Rameau opera was set to open on Nov. 11 and run through Nov. 22 with a cast starring Reinoud van Mechelen and Elsa Benoit in the title roles and Sylvie Brunet-Grupposo, Stéphane Degout, Séraphine Cotrez, Nahuel di Pierro, Eugénie Lefebvre, and Lea Desandre in supporting roles. Conductor Raphaël Pichon will be at the podium.
