Opera Colorado to Present Company Premiere of ‘Die tote Stadt’

By Francisco Salazar

Opera Colorado continues its 2022-23 Season with a new production of Korngold’s “Die tote Stadt.”

The opera, which opens on Feb. 25 and runs through March 5, will be presented for the first time at Opera Colorado.

In a statement, says Greg Carpenter, the Ellie Caulkins General & Artistic Director said,  “Celebrating forty years of grand opera at Opera Colorado here in Denver is a milestone in itself and presenting Korngold’s rarely-performed gem Die tote Stadt is a fitting tribute to our four decades of artistic achievements and community service. It is a privilege to shake the dust off this extraordinary work and give it a fresh, elegant production conceived by director Chas Rader-Shieber and designer Robert Perdziola. The beauty of the music, the intensity of the story, and the opulence of the sets and costumes will make our audience an instant lover of this important romantic work. This is the kind of daring and exciting undertaking that we want to be known for in our community, and on the national and international opera scene. It is a moment in our history that you will not want to miss.”

The opera will be directed by Chas Rader-Shieber and will star Jonathan Burton, Sara Gartland, Daniel Belcher, Elizabeth Bishop, and Jonathan Johnson.
