Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Steps Down

By David Salazar

Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Jo Davies has stepped down from her position.

Per an official press release, the decision came following a difference of opinion on the direction of the organization.

“I am proud of the artistic excellence and success of the work we have been able to achieve in my tenure and enormously grateful to the amazing audiences, patrons, artists, and colleagues who have made my time as Artistic Director so rewarding. I look forward to building new creative relationships with audiences and artists here in Australia,” Davies, who took over the role of Artistic Director in November 2023., said in an official statement. She was then Davies took over when Lyndon Terracini, who had held the position for 13 years, stepped down abruptly. The company had been in turmoil prior to his departure.
The company is set to present its 2025 programming, which along with the 2024 schedule, was organized by Davies.
“We’re very excited about Jo’s 2025 season. It demonstrates Jo’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the relevance of our artform for today’s audiences. Jo’s strength as an artistic voice and director are clear,” Opera Australia CEO Fiona Allan noted.
The company has been seeking out an independent review of artistic management and planning processes since July and plans to have announcements from this review coming soon.
