Opera Australia to Ring in 2024 with ‘La Traviata’

Opera Australia is set to open its 2024 season with the Sydney premiere of”La Traviata.”

The production, directed by Sarah Giles, will open on Jan. 2, 2024. The opera is presented in co-production with Opera Queensland, State Opera South Australia, and West Australian Opera.

Headlining the cast will be soprano Samantha Clarke in her Opera Australia debut. She is joined by tenor Kang Wang and baritone Phillip Rhodes in his Opera Australia debut. This cast performs from Jan. 2 – Feb. 10. Following those performances, a new cast takes over through March 14, 2024. That cast stars Sophie Salvesani, Tomas Dalton, and Luke Gabbedy.

InReview’s take on Giles’ production stated that “Verdi’s masterpiece feels audaciously new all over again in this vivid interpretation” while Limelight stated that it was “very successful in bringing a fresh perspective to such a well-known work.”
