Opera Atelier To Present One-Night-Only Performance Of ‘The Angel Speaks’

By Nicole Kuchta

Opera Atelier of Toronto will present “The Angel Speaks” in the Samuel Hall Currelly Gallery at the Royal Ontario Museum on Feb. 21, 2019.

The one-hour concert “blends masterpieces of the baroque repertoire with the Canadian premiere of ‘Annunciation,’ a new commission by Edwin Huizinga for period instruments,” and will feature both music and dance of baroque and contemporary styles.

Opera Atelier’s Founding Co-Artistic Director Marshal Pynkoski noted that that, “the two styles are meant to overlap with each other, reflect one another and merge into a unique creative endeavor. This innovative concert underlines Opera Atelier’s core belief that creations and techniques from the past can act as important catalysts for creating something vibrant and new for 21st-century audiences.”

Featured in the concert are soprano Mireille Asselin and baritone Jesse Blumberg. The singers will be joined on stage by the Artists of Atelier Ballet, performing baroque choreography by Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg and contemporary choreography by Tyler Gledhill. David Fallis will conduct the Tefelmusik Baroque Orchestra.
