Opera Atelier to Mount Canadien Premiere of Major Handel Opera

By David Salazar

Opera Atelier is set to mount Handel’s “The Resurrection” as its finale to the 2019-20 season.

The production, which kicks off on April 11, 2020, will be the Canadian premiere of the opera. It will be conducted by David Fallis with soprano Carla Huhtanen, soprano Meghan Lindsay, mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy, tenor Isaiah Bell, and bass Stephen Hegedus starring. The Artists of the Atelier Ballet will also appear in the performance.

Opera Atelier Founding Co-Artistic Director Marshall Pynkoski C.M will direct and Lajeunesse Zingg will provide choreography.

“Handel’s expansive vision for this timeless story of rebirth is widely considered one of his greatest works” Pynkoski stated in a press release. “I’m fascinated by this world in which the individual experiences spiritual ecstasy through a ravishing of the senses.”

The opera was written for Easter of 1708 and juxtaposes how the celestial beings and earthbound humans, represented by Mary Magdalene, St. John the Evangelist, and Cleophas, make sense of Christ’s sacrifice.
