By David Salazar

Opera at Artpark, celebrating its 50th season, will inaugurate its new opera program with Orff’s masterpiece “Carmina Burana,” in a presentation by La Fura Dels Baus.

The performance, which will take place at the Artpark Mainstage Theater on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at 8:00 p.m., will be directed and designed by Carlus Padrissa. It will feature  the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Gil Rose. The ensemble will be accompanied by the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and various community groups. Soloists include Antoni Marsol Puig, Luca Espinosa Gil, Amparo Navarro Serra, and Jordi Domenech Subirans.

“Artpark has a substantial legacy in opera: from the North American premiere of Philip Glass’ ‘Satiagraha’ in 1981 to the famed four-year staging of Wagner’s ‘Ring Cycle’ in 1984-88 under then music director Christopher Keen,” said Sonia Clark, President of Artpark & Company, in an official press release. “It could not have been more meaningful for us to reinstate the program in Artpark’s 50th season under the guidance of our new Opera conductor and producer, Gil Rose. This production by Fura dels Baus is also the next step in our ongoing commitment to bold world-class programming and is reflective of Artpark Board of Directors recently adapted vision for Artpark as an international destination for live and visual arts embracing the relationship of Art, Nature, and Culture to create experiences of discovery and awe.”

The company recently named Gil Rose as its Conductor-in-Residence.
