Oper Leipzig has named Peter Heilker its new artistic director.

Heilker was picked from 30 other applicants and will take over the artistic direction of the opera house on August 1, 2028.

He will succeed Tobias Wolff, who will become General Director of the Braunschweig State Theatre in the summer of 2026.

In a statement Leipzig’s Mayor for Culture, Skadi Jennicke said, “Peter Heilker is an experienced opera director who is passionately dedicated to the genre and has also impressed with his clear leadership style.”

Heilker has worked at the Theater an der Wien, where he has served as Program and Casting Director and has also worked with the Bayerische Staatsoper, and Theater St. Gallen.
