On Site Opera to Showcase ‘Il Tabarro’ at South Street Seaport Museum

By David Salazar

On Site Opera is set to present “Il Tabarro” between May 14 – 17, 2023.

The company will showcase the opera at the historic lightship Ambrose at the South Street Seaport, making the second time the organization partners with the Seaport Museum.

“Il Tabarro” will be conducted by Geoffrey McDonald and will feature guest director Laine Rettmer. The cast will star baritone Eric McKeever in the role of Michele with soprano Ashley Milanese taking on Giorgetta and Yi Li as Luigi. Other cast members include tenor Jose Heredia (Tinca), bass-baritone Artega Wright (Talpa), contralto Sharmay Musacchio (La Frugola), and tenor Dane Suarez (Song Seller).

“I am thrilled to be stage directing ‘Il tabarro’ for On Site Opera,” said Rettmer in an official press statement. “I’ve been making site-specific operas in New York for over a decade and have served on On Site’s Artistic Advisory Council since 2019… What we have planned for this next installment of Puccini’s Il Trittico promises to be the perfect marriage of found site and libretto. Set on and around the South Street Seaport Museum’s lightship Ambrose, this opera will be an immersive event that invites you to revel in Adami’s fast-paced, heartbreaking story of passion, jealousy, and murder. You will experience the overlay of 2023 merging into 1916 in this engrossing 50-minute tale set against the setting sun on New York City’s Seaport.”

The company is set to present “Suor Angelica” in the upcoming season, bringing a close to its multi-year project of presenting Puccini’s “Il Trittico.”
