On Site Opera To Present Work Premiere of ‘Murasaki’s Moon’

By David Salazar

On Site Opera will present the world premiere of Michi Wiancko and Deborah Brevoort’s “Murasaki’s Moon” this May. The world premiere is set to take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Astor Chinese Garden Court.

Per a press release, the opera is inspired by the life and work of Lady Murasaki, a member of the Japanese Imperial Court in 11th century Japan, who famously authored what many consider to be the world’s first novel, “The Tale of Genji.”

The opera is in one act and expected to run at just one hour in length. It will star mezzo soprano Kristen Choi in the title role with Andrew Stenson as Genji. The performance will be directed by Eric Einhorn with Geoffrey McDonald conducting.

The first performance is set for May 17, 2019 with ensuing shows on May 18 and 19; there will be a total of six presentations of the opera.

The work was made possibly by OPERA America’s Opera Grands for Female Composers.
