Oksana Volkova Makes Surprise Met Opera ‘Carmen’ Debut

By Francisco Salazar

On Nov. 17, Oksana Volkova jumped into the Metropolitan Opera’s production of “Carmen.”

The mezzo replaced Isabel Leonard, who was suffering from a back spasm.

Volkova took to social media and said, “Today my biggest dream came true! I sang Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera!❤️” She also posted the curtain call.

Volkova made her Met debut in 2013 as Maddalena in “Rigoletto” and has gone on to perform in the company’s productions of “Eugene Onegin,” “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk,” and “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.”

For Carmen, Volkova joined a cast that includes Matthew Polenzani, Kristina Mkhitaryan, and Adam Plachetka. Fabien Gabel was conducting.

Isabel Leonard returns for the Nov. 21 performance.
