Ojai Youth Opera To Premiere ‘Nightingale & The Tower’

By Francisco Salazar

The Ojai Youth Opera is set to premiere its first original commissioned opera, “Nightingale & The Tower.”

The new opera by composer Jason Treuting, Grammy award-winning musician Mikael Jorgensen and OYO Founder and Artistic Director Rebecca Comerford tells the story of a young boy’s odyssey to find himself while discovering the delicate balance between technology and the environment in a dystopian world that no longer seeks value in nature and it’s wild and beautiful imperfections.

The new opera will be shown in a full-scale production with an electronic chamber opera created for six professional singers, 29 youth OYO members, synthesizers, chamber orchestra, and long-stringed harp. The work will also feature an art installation that transforms any physical space into a musical instrument.

“Nightingale & The Tower” is set to be performed on May 18 & 19 at the famed Libbey Bowl.
