Odyssey Opera To Premiere Gounod’s ‘La Reine De Saba’

Odyssey Opera is set to open its sixth season with the U.S. premiere of Gounod’s “La Reine de Saba.”

The opera’s premiere will kickstart a two-part journey with the first in Fall 2018 memorializing the 200th anniversary of Gounod’s birth as well as the 125th death anniversary, and the second in Winter/Spring 2019 will be a celebration of Helen of Troy.

“La Reine de Saba” will star Kara Shay Thomson, Dominick Chenes, Kevin Thompson, Michelle Trainor, Matthew DiBatistta, David Kravitz, and David Salsbury Fry.

Per a press release Gil Rose, artistic director of the company, noted “If you enjoy classic French opera, then this is a must-see show for you. We are thrilled to be heralding the Boston classical music season with the resurrection of this forgotten masterpiece by the Father of French grand opera.”

The 2018-19 season will also include Gounod’s “Le médecin malgré lui” followed by three operas inspired by Helen of Troy including Gluck’s “Paride ed Elena,” Strauss’ “Die ägyptische Helena,” Offenbach’s La Belle Hélène.”

“La Reine de Saba” makes its premiere on Sept. 22, 2018.
