Obituary: Romanian Soprano Anda-Louise Bogza Dies at 60

On Dec. 13, Romanian soprano Anda-Louise Bogza died at the age of 60.

Born on Feb. 27, 1965 in Piatra Neamț, Bogza studied music at the George Enescu Conservatory in Iași, the National University of Music Bucharest, and at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

Following her studies, she began her career performing at the State Opera and the National Theatre in Prague and continued her career there performing numerous roles.

Bogza also sang at the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Leipzig Opera, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Bavarian State Opera, Oper Frankfurt, Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, the New Israeli Opera, the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, the Slovak National Theatre, and at the Salzburg Festival.

Her signature roles included Leonora in “Il Trovatore,” as well the title role of Dvořák’s “Rusalka.” She also sang such works as “Nabucco,” “Un ballo in maschera,” “Don Giovanni,” “Otello,” “Don Carlo,” “Il Tabarro,” “Káťa Kabanová,” “Pique Dame,” “La Fanciulla del West,” “Aida,” “Jenůfa,” “Manon Lescaut,” “Tosca,” and “Turandot.”

Critics praise the soprano for her “full-bodied and flexible soprano” and “highly dramatic soprano.”
