Obituary: Rodion Shchedrin Passes Away at 92

Composer Rodion Shchedrin has passed away on Aug. 29, 2025 at the age of 92.

Shchedrin was born in Moscow on Dec. 16, 1932. He went to the Moscow Choral School and Moscow Conservatory, where he studied composition and graduated in 1955. In 1958, Shchedrin married the ballerina Maya Plisetskaya.

In 1965, Shchedrin began teaching at the Moscow Conservatory. He became president of the Union of Russian Composers in 1973, succeeding Shostakovich, and was a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts.

Shchedrin composed seven operas and several vocal and choral pieces. His opera, “The Enchanted Wanderer” was commissioned by Lorin Maazel for the New York Philharmonic and received its premiered in New York in 2002. His other operas are “Not Love Alone,” “Dead Souls,” “Lolita,” “Boyarina Morozova,” “The Left-Hander,” and “A Christmas Tale.”  Other compositions include ballets, incidental music, orchestral works, chamber music, solo piano works, and film scores.
