Obituary: Opera Director Rhoda Levine Dies at 93

Opera director Rhoda Levine has died at the age of 93.

Born in New York City, she graduated from the Bard College and went on to become a formidable Opera director choreographer educator.

As an opera director Levine went on to work at Cape Town Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, New York City Opera, Kentucky Opera, Nederlandse Opera, Theatre of St. Louis, San Diego Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Belgium’s Opéra National, Scottish Opera, and San Francisco Opera.

Among the operas she directed were “Porgy and Bess,” “The Good Soldier,” “Lizzie Borden,” “Rigoletto,” “Der Kaiser von Atlantis,” “Le Nozze di Figaro,” “From the House of the Dead,” “Little Women,” “Treemonisha,” “La Bohème,” and “Lucia di Lammermoor,” among many others.

Outside of her theatrical work, Levine went on to write the libretto for “Opus Number Zoo” by Luciano Berio and also wrote numerous children’s books. She was the artistic director of “Play It By Ear,” an improvisational opera group.

Levine also dedicated herself to teaching and was a faculty member at the Curtis Institute of Music, Yale School of Drama, The Juilliard School, Northwestern University, Manhattan School of Music, and Mannes College. She was also a guest teacher/visiting artist at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.
