Obituary: Opera Director Pierre Médecin has Died

By Afton Markay

Opera director Pierre Médecin has passed away at 90.

Médecin was born in 1935. He trained in opera at Bayreuth with the stage director Wieland Wagner, the grandson of Richard Wagner and great-grandson of Franz Liszt.

He joined Nice Opera in 1959, at the age of 24, as an artistic advisor before becoming its director from 1982-83. From 1994 to 2000, he directed the Opéra-Comique.

Alongside his roles as director of opera houses, Médecin served as stage director of operas even after his retirement. This was notably the case at La Scala in Milan with Claude Debussy’s “Pelléas et Mélisande,” which he directed in 2005, and Richard Strauss’s “Arabella,” presented at the Capitole de Toulouse in 2006.

No information has been released about a memorial at this time.
