
Obituary: Musicologist & Critic Angelo Foletto Passes Away

Angelo Foletto has passed away. He was 76.
Foletto was born in Milan on Aug. 20, 1949. He studied modern literature at the University of Milan, with a thesis on Stiffelio and Aroldo by Giuseppe Verdi. He also studied at the G. Verdi Conservatory of Music.
During his career Foletto worked in the musical archives of the Angelicum, the Teatro alla Scala, and the Casa Musicale Sonzogno. He wrote for publications such as Discoteca Hi-Fi, Musica and Musica viva, Classic Voice, La Repubblica, and helped create the classical music series of the L’Espresso Group and wrote numerous texts accompanying the related audio-video publications. He wrote and appeared in programs about music on Classic TV, RTSI, Radio Popolare, and Radio 3.
From 1981 to 2006, Foletto taught History of Music at the Conservatories of Verona, Piacenza and Milan. He was also known for leading “Writing about Music” seminars at the Holden School in Turin.
Foletto’s publications include “The Voice as an Instrument,” “Lohengrin at La Scala: Origins and Traditions of Wagnerian Stage Design,” “Carlo Maria Giulini,” and “Carmen, a guide to the opera,” among others.
Foletto held the role as president of the National Association of Music Critics, Friends of the Modern Art Gallery of Milan, and the Cultural Association of Ledro, hamlet of Pieve di Ledro.
Foletto passed on Jan. 29.
