Obituary: Composer & Pedagogue Michel Merlet Passes Away

Composer and pedagogue Michel Merlet has passed away.

Merlet was born in 1939. He studied piano at the Paris Conservatory and went on to study composition with Tony Aubin and theory with Olivier Messiaen.

In 1966, he entered the Prix de Rome competition where he won a prize for his cantata “La Muse qui est la Grâce.” Merlet taught composition and orchestration at the École Normale de Musique de Paris from 1988 to 2020. He also taught at the Paris Conservatory, Schola Cantorum, Shanghai Conservatory, and the Beijing Conservatory.

Michel Merlet is credited with nearly fifty compositions.

Merlet died on May 3.
