Obituary: Mezzo-Soprano Claire Powell Dies

English Mezzo-soprano Caire Powell has died.

Born in 1954, Powell won the Richard Tauber memorial prize 1978 nd made her  début at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1978 as the second lady in “Die Zauberflöte.” She went on to sing numerous roles with the company including Giunone in “Il Ritorno D’Ulisse,” Mrs Meg Page in “Falstaff,” Hippolyta in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and Flora in “La Traviata.” Her final performance with the company came in 1988.

She was also a member of the Royal Opera House between 1979 and 1985 and made her London recital in 1979. Her American debut came in 1990 in San Francisco and she also performed as a Graz ensemble member.

In 1985 Powell sang at the London premiere of Zemlinsky’s “A Florentine Tragedy” in the role of Bianca.
