
Obituary: Mexican Soprano Lourdes Ambriz Dies at 64

The soprano died after a battle with cancer.
The news was announced by the Ópera de Bellas Artes where Ambriz debuted in 1982 as Olympia in “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.” With the company Ambriz went on to become the company’s Artistic Sub-director and later Artistic Director from 2015 to 2017.
Born in 1961, in Mexico City, Ambriz began her career in 1980 with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional before debuting with the Bellas Artes. She went on to sing with the Orquesta de Cámara de Saint Paul, Dallas Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, and Orquesta Simón Bolívar, among others.
In 1990, she went on tour in Spain with a group of Mexican soloists under Eduardo Mata. In 1991 she made her European debut at the Ópera de Málaga and 1992 she went on a European tour through 12 countries. Later, she did a U.S. and South American tour.
