Obituary: Metropolitan Opera Bass Trombonist Stephen Norrell Dies

Metropolitan Opera bass trombonist Stephen Norrell has died.

Norrell studied music at the Juilliard School of Music, where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in trombone performance.

He went on to perform with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from 1981 to 2018.

In addition to his post at the Met, he also served as a faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music for 47 years and as a private instructor.

Norrell’s wedding to Gail Stern, a harpist with the New Jersey Symphony was documented in the New York Times back in 1997. He is survived by his wife and daughters, Jesse and Kim.

In a statement the Met Orchestra said ” We are sorry to announce the passing of one of our Met Orchestra musicians, Steve Norrell, (Met bass trombonist from 1981-2018) who passed away last week. Our thoughts and prayers are with Steve’s family and friends.”
