Obituary: Legendary Spanish Soprano Enriqueta Tarrés Dies at 90

On . Nov. 18, 2024, Spanish Soprano Enriqueta Tarrés died at the age of 90.

Born on March 17, 1934, in Barcelona, Tarrés began her music studies in 1946 at the Conservatorio Municipal de Barcelona and won the Grand Prix International de Canto de Tolosa in 1955. She went on to make her operatic debut as Leonora in “Il Trovatore” in Valencia and went on to make her Gran Teatre del Liceu debut in 1957.

Throughout her career, Tarrés performed in many leading theaters in Wuppertal, Berlin, Hamburg, and Glyndebourne. At the Metropolitan Opera, she debuted in 1973 and performed nine times in productions of “La Bohème” and “Madama Butterfly.”

Other major roles that the soprano was known for included Desdemona in “Otello,” Amelia in “Un Ballo in Machera,” Santuzza in “Cavalleria Rusticana,” Elisabetta in “Don Carlo,” The Verdi Requiem, Chrysothemis in Strauss’ and Donna Anna in “Don Giovanni.”

In addition to her operatic career, she was recognized for her Lied and oratorio interpretations and as a professor at the Conservatorio de Vila-seca (Tarragona), and the Conservatorio Superior de Música del Liceo de Barcelona.

On April 25, 1987, Tarrés was one of the soloists at the inauguration of the Palau de la Música de València, and later in her career, she received the distinction Kammersängerin at the Berlin State Opera and the Premio al mejor Intérprete Catalán.
