Obituary: Francisco Lázaro Passes Away at 93

Tenor Francisco Lázaro has passed away. He was 93.

Lázaro was born on March 13, 1932, in Barcelona. He studied singing at the Conservatori del Liceu and graduated in 1960. That same year, he made his debut at the Liceu in Barcelona in “Don Gaspar,” and later in season, he performed in “Aida.” The following two seasons he performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. In 1964, he debuted at the Salzburg Festival singing the role of Malcolm in “Macbeth,” a role he reprised at the 1965 Salzburg Festival.

Lázaro went on to perform with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Bayerische Staatsoper München, Oper Frankfurt, and Hamburg Opera, along with San Francisco Opera, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and many more. He worked under the baton of renowned conductors such as Karajan, Karl Böhm, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Claudio Abbado, Nello Santi, and Jesús López Cobos. In 1992, he left the stage and began teaching vocal technique to young singers starting their careers in Barcelona.

The tenor is featured on a recording from the Salzburg Festival, and a live recording of “Turandot” from the Düsseldorf Opera.

Lázaro passed away on Jan. 25, in his home town.
